Welcome to Thoughts and Ponderings on God. The purpose of these short inspirations is to encourage deeper meditation and contemplation on the Scriptures. It is our hope that you will find spiritual nourishment for your soul and that in so doing, you will draw closer to our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

"Call to Me (the Lord), and I will answer you, and show you great and mighty things, which you do not know." Jer 33:3

Acts 4:13

"When they saw the courage of Peter and John and realized that they were unschooled, ordinary men, they were astonished and they took note that these men had been with Jesus."

Scripture also tells us that bad company corrupts good character.    We are most definately known by the company we keep.

Many Christians believe that they can do as they please because they have been "saved by grace" and that nothing can happen to them, but this is very wrong.  Go to the sewer often enough and you will begin to stink.  You can't hang out with unsaved people all the time, go where they go, do what they do, talk like they talk, and expect to remain Christ-like.  It just doesn't work that way.  Wordly people want nothing to do with the ways of God, and will do everything in their power to change you.  Hang around with them long enough, and it will begin to work.

Peter and John were known to be uneducated, ordinary, run-of-the-mill fishermen.  All you needed to be a fisherman was a whole lot of brawn and not too much brain.  And more then likely, they were coarse and vulgar.  That's just a simple fact of life.  Crude jokes, vulgar talk, lewd suggestions... the way of the world.  They were well know in their area because of their fishing business.  Peter and Andrew had a business and their cousins James and John worked for their well-known father Zebedee.  So their professional and personal reputations preceeded them.  All over Capernium.

Then one day, they met Jesus.  From the time Jesus walked the earth until He returns, everyone will meet Jesus sometime.  What we do with that meeting will determine the course of the remainder of our lives, and into eternity.  All four of the boys had an encounter with the Lord and all four dropped their old lives without a moment's hesitation, even with old Zebedee bellowing and blustering at them all.  They weren't afraid to follow their hearts in the right direction.  They spent three years being taught and loved by the Master.  Three years soaking and basking in the glory of the Son of God.  And during these three years, change occurred.  With slow, remarkable change, Peter went from being a loud-mouthed braggart to a man confident of who he was in Christ and more then willing to share the good news of salvation.  Likewise, the other three.  So when the time came that they were brought up on charges before the Sanhedrin, the illustrious Pharisees observed a most remarkable change in the fishermen.  They spoke with knowledge and authority, with confidence and boldness, emboldened by the Holy Spirit.  Completely unafraid.

A changed life speaks volumes.  No words are necessary.  A changed life is the greatest testimony there is, it is visible evidence of the work of God.

We are known by the company we keep.  What kind of company are you keeping?  Is it a struggle to adhere to your Christian principles or are you walking with those of like mind and spirit?  Has your life been so changed, your attitudes, language, behavior, that people know who you are living for?  What kind of a witness are you?

Lord Jesus, when I grow up, I want to be just like you.  Help me, Lord, to keep my eyes on your face, my ears to your lips and my heart joined to yours.  When people see me, let them see you., let them see a life that's been changed.  I love you, Jesus.  Help me to always, always to walk with you.  Amen.

Hebrews 12:14

"Make every effort to live in peace with all men and to be holy, wthout holiness no one will see the LORD."

Wow!  Talk about a one-two punch.  This one could very well  put us down and out for the count.  The amount of material contained in this verse could create a thesis, but I don't believe anyone, including me, is ready for that.  Or maybe we need to be.  At any rate, let's see what the Lord is putting in our hearts here.

There are two direct COMMANDS, not suggestions, in this verse.  (1) Make evey effort to live in peace with all men; and (2) to be holy.  Why are we given these commands?  Because, as the verse continues, without holiness, no one will see the LORD.  Houston, I think we have a problem.

Let's start with the first command: make every effort to live in peace with all men.  Two words immediately hit me - EVERY and ALL.  Hmmm, make every effort.  Not a partial, not half-hearted, not just when we feel like it, not just the ones that are comfortaable, but EVERY effort.  Leave no stone untured. Leave no room for "could haves" or "should haves".  When all is said and done, when we look back and say "there's nothing left to be done, I've done it all," only then will we have made EVERY effort.  That takes work.  Hard, soul-searching, unpleasant, uncomfortale work.

Next, it says "with ALL men..." Again, not some, not a few, not several, not many, not my friends, not my family, not my etc. etc, etc, but ALL men.  Friend or Foe.  No distinction here.   We cannot harbor any negative feelings whatsoever towards anyone, for out of negativeness comes anger, hate, bitterness and eventually violence.  Even for the Christian, for yes, we murder with our tongues.  Unkindness in any way, left to fester in the heart, will come out our mouths, killing reputations and spirits.  Gossip and Slander, the twin sisters. Oh yes, that we do.  Most effectively.

The second command is to "be holy."  Why?  Because "without holiness no one will see God."  That rips at my heart.  Witout holiness no one will see God!!  So, what is holiness?  To be holy means to be set apart for God!!!  We must have a higher quality of righteousness than that of the scribes and Pharisees (matt 12:7).  The New Testament teaches that true holiness expresses itself in patient and loving service for God while awaiting the Lord's return.  The first five books of the Bible are filled with God's command:  "Be holy, because I the Lord your God, am holy."  There's a contemporary song that goes "I want to be holy, set apart for you my Master........"  We all WANT this, but are we willing to accept the sacrafice it takes to BECOME this?  Are we willing to separate ourselves from worldly values and live our lives with kingdom values?

"This is love for God: to obey is commands.  And his commands are not burdensome . . . " (1jn 5:3)

If we truly love God, we will obey.  It's that simple.  And that hard.  But that critical.  Just remember, "all things are possible with God."

Sweet Jesus, it's so hard, so hard.  I want to be holy as you are holy, but I fail so miserably.  Strengthen me by your Holy Spirit, fill me with holy courage and determination to do your will.  Enable me to walk the walk that glorifies your name and brings me closer to you.  I want to see your face, O God.  I want to be holy.  I love you, Lord, I love you....................

John 9:4

"As long as it is day, we must do the work of him who sent me . . ."

In 1989, I watched a movie called "Double Exposure - The Margaret Bourke-White Story".  It is a true story, made for TCM and starred Farrah Fawcett as Margaret.  Margaret grew up during the Depression Era and eventually became a world-renowned photojournalist for Life Magazine.  Her work is fabulous and famous.  Eventually she married, and at the end of the movie, she and her husband were living in London during the bombings of WWII.  In the final scene, the couple are in their apartment, bombs are falling, and they are having an "intense discussion" (would that be an arguement/fight???).  The husband  is all for hitting the nearest bomb shelter, pleading with Margaret not to wrecklessly throw her life away, to go with him and be safe, but Margaret is furious with him.  She had always been a notorious risk-taker and this time was no different. She violently grabs her camera equipment, yanks open the door, turns back to her husband yelling at him, telling him he's a coward, he can rot where he is, but that she will continue to do her work, no matter what is happening.  After a few more ravings, she stops and looks at him and says that she doesn't care what he does anymore, he's already dead, but "when I die, I want to be alive!"   The door slams and she's gone.

That one sentence, out of the whole movie, made such an incredible impact on me that, to this day, I've never forgotten it.  I know that God gives us nuggets of gold in everything, absolutely everything, but we miss most of them because we are not looking with the eyes and heart of Jesus.

Today's scripture says that as long as we have a day, as long as we are alive, we must be about the Lord's work.  It doesn't matter what is happening, how we are feeling, what we are doing, or where we are, the work of the Lord is primary in our lives.  It is to BE our lives, no matter what our vocation is.

Question:  What is the "work of him who sent me"?
Answer:    To glorify God and point others to Jesus.

Question:  How do we do that?
Answer:    By spending time with Jesus.  By being so competely consumed by the Holy Spirit, that even without speaking, our lives oooooooze Jesus.  (you know, like people who eat tons and tons of garlic ooze the scent of garlic from their pores?)

Our actions, more then all our words will ever say, speak, no SCREAM, whose we are.  Our life actions tell the world who we follow, who we love, who we live for.  And sometimes, words compliment these actions.
But the world watches what we DO long before they ever listen to what we say.  And when we do speak, if the words don't match the life actions, then we are denounced as "hypocites".  Just like the pharisees of Jesus' day, we abound with pharisees today.

In Luke 18:8, Jesus asks the question:  ". . . when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on the earth?"  In other words, will our lives be found true to Him whom we call Savior and Lord?  Will our lives be glorifying God and pointing others to Jesus?  When the Lord returns or calls us home, will we be alive in Him when we die?  THAT is what that sentence said to me, and has become engraved in my memory and heart.  Will I be alive in Christ when I die?  Will I be found faithfully doing the work of the Lord on the day he calls me home?

O Jesus, it's so easy to love you, but sometimes I fail so miserably in pleasing you.  Forgive me, Precious Lord, and change my heart, renew a right spirit within me, so that my life with be pleasing and holy in Your sight, and that the words of my mouth and the mediations of my heart will be pleasing to you, My God, my rock and salvation.  Amen.

Psalm 37:4

"Delight yourself in the Lord and He will give you the desires of your heart."

Every time I read this verse I instantly envision a young girl-child (must be me!) in a pretty little summer dress and shiny black, yes, shiny black, patent-leather shoes (isn't all this detail just too this weird...) giggling and skipping and jumping in the brilliant, unclouded sunshine, arms lifted to the sky, thoroughly and completely oblivious to everything around her. She is, quite simply, in love with the moment. And to me, of course, this "moment" is Jesus. I don't see Him, but I know, without the shadow of a doubt, that He is there and the very reason for my ecstasy. I just stop reading and savor the moment for as long as I can. Ummmmmmm, so delicious.

I heard a teaching long ago about the word "delight" in the Psalms. The teacher said that the word delight means "to kiss the cheeks of Jesus". And instantly, I was lost. Lost in the wonder and joy and absolute abandon of snuggling up to Jesus, taking His sweet face in my hands, and smothering Him with kisses, as small children do with those they deeply love. Giggling, and snuggling and planting kisses everywhere. Can't you just see Jesus throwing back His head, His eyes all crinkled up, laughing, totally embracing you in that moment. The pure sweetness of it all is overwhelming.

This is how Jesus wants us to delight in Him - sweetly, purely, with utter abandon, giving no thought whatsoever to what anyone else in the world is thinking. This is the moment for just me and Him. Can you feel it?

Then, when you have collapsed with holy fatigue, exhausted from the sheer glory of it all, as you rest in the meadow of Christ's peace with butterflies of grace cascading all over you, Jesus fulfills His promise to you and gives you your heart's desire. And at this moment, you can be sure that your desire and His will for your life are a perfect match. When you delight yourself in the Lord, you are centered in His perfect will. Ohhhhhhhhhh, the incredible glory of it all!!!!!

Delight yourself in the Lord. Become a child again the in the arms of Jesus. Why are adults so afraid to let themselves be emotionally and spiritually child-LIKE in their faith, free and unhindered by the opinions and constraints of others? We have allowed, given permission, to the world to dictate IT'S terms to us in regards to our spiritual behavior. Shame on us. All this is doing is depriving US of an intimate, loving, spontaneous relationship with Jesus. And guess who the winner is in THAT deal!!!!!!! And it's not me or you or Jesus!!!!!

Matt 18:2 says that unless we become AS (emphasis mine) little children, we will not see the kingdom of heaven. Ouch!!!! Guess this is one of those commands we don't think are all that important and are farther down on our to-do list. It's time, as Ron Konely sings, to take back what the devil's stolen. It's time to climb to the "high places" and tear down the altars of Baal and consecrate the land again to the Lord. It is long past time to delight in the Lord.

Are you ready to dance before the Lord, if only in your spirit? Are you ready to kiss His cheecks and giggle with Him? Then just do it! It don't get no better then this!

I love dancing with you, Jesus. I love giggling and jumping and singing with you in your meadows. I am so thankful you want to dance with me. Thank you for drawing me to you and filling me with delight for you. I love you, Jesus. Amen.

Philippians 1:6

". . . being confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ".

In my living room I have a 3-tiered plant stand in front of the sliding glass doors to keep all my plants thru the winter. The window faces east, so on the days when the sun DOES shine, they get a good dose of global warming. My recliner is next to this.

I was sitting there the other evening and as I glanced over to the plants, I noticed something on my one cactus that didn't appear to belong there. I zoomed in for a close-up look and I couldn't believe what I was seeing. In this mangy, old, mis-shappen cactus with all of it's pricklies and stickies, a flower is beginning to emerge!!!!!!!! And not just one, but two !!!!! I was totally flabbergasted. And they are PINK !!! I've had this cactus for 3 years and it has done nothing but exist, and just barely, I might add. I water it, I sun it, I ignore it, and yet, it appears it has been thriving.

This is our story. Before we receive Jesus as our Savior, we are like this cactus in the eyes of our Lord- hard, prickly, mis-shappen, ugly to look at, not desireable in any way. The covering of sin makes us like this. Nasty and untouchable!!!! And a lot of the time, other people don't even want to be around us because our nature is so ugly. But when we receive Jesus into our hearts, a miracle begins. It is not readily apparent a lot of the time, but it is there nevertheless. Just like the cactus. It took 3 years for this cactus to mature to the point of flowering. And each one of us has a maturing time in Christ. And that time is different for every one of us. We each have our own "flowering" timetable.

We must allow God the time He wants to work in us. His timetable is the only one that matters. If we try to force things, the results are always imperfect. Did you know that a flower that is forced into blooming in a hothouse has no scent? If we try to force our Christian maturity, our aroma will be lacking. "For we are to God the fragrance of Christ . . . " (1 Cor 2:15) We want our perfume to be a pleasing, lingering, gratifiying, desiring aroma to our Lord. So we must allow Him the time He has ordained for our maturing. We must water, sun, feed our spirits with the Word of God and Christian fellowship. All the ingredients necessary for spiritual growth and maturity.

And then, in the fullnes of time, He who has begun a good work in you will bring it to completion. You will flower. In all your radiant, spiritual beauty. Magnificant!!! To complete the task to which you have been called. The flower on the cactus is ever so slow in coming forth, so very, very slow. But it was designed that way. For a very specific purpose. Some flowers pop right open. Some seemingly take forever. And every speed imaginable inbetween. So it is with us. Every one is different and every one of us must look to Jesus to know our time of flowering and the task to which our maturing has led us.

When I look at my cactus now, I don't see it ugly, mis-shapen, hard or prickly. I see it beautiful, delicate, pleasing to the eye, a miracle. I still must handle it gently, but it is soooooooo much more enjoyable then it was before. It's purpose is being brought forth.

How is your maturing coming along? Do you need more water? fertilizer? son-shine? Are you in the process of flowering or have you flowered already? Have you found your purpose in the Lord? Do not despair. Remember, God has promised, PROMISED, to bring you to completion. He ALWAYS finishes a work He has begun. Always. Thank you, Jesus, for your precious promises, that we can clutch to our hearts and hold you to your word. Your faithfulness is unending and your mercies are new every morning. Praise be your name, O Holy One of Heaven. Amen.

Day 1- Galatians 6:6

Greetings Saints of God,

Today is my first day of blogging. I have done nothing with the site, but as time progresses, I hope the site does also.

The purpose and intent of this site is to share my thoughts, feelings, inspirations and short teachings on the wonders of God as He reveals them to me. No small feat, to be sure. Gal 6:6 says: "Let hm who is taught the word share in all good things with him who teaches." I'm not supposed to keep the good news to myself, so this is how I've chosen to share it

This whole blogging thing is, for lack of a better word, mindboggling. Computer literate I am not, so p - l - e - a - s - eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee be patient with me. My bottom feels like it's been velcroed to the computer chair as it is.

One final thought. The writing, the thoughts, the opinions that will be stated will be mine, and I'm sure some of them will be disagreed with. I'll try reeeeeeeeeeal hard not to be contriversial, as I want this to be a forum that glorifies our Lord and Savior. As Paul said, ....let love and grace abound.

Blessings in the Lord,
Linda
